cyanogenmod 10.1 on Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T

Stable release of cyanogenmod 10.1 was released recently. It is based on Android 4.2 (jellybean) and is available for download for Asus transformer pad infinity / TF700T.

You may also want to download latest Google apps which aren’t included in cyanogenmod.

One has to download the unlock device app from Asus support site. Search for TF700T, select operating system Android and go to tools. Warranty is lost after installing the app!

TWRP ist a recovery manager with touch user interface and is available for TF700T.

The easiest way to install twrp is via ROM manager app goo manager. Unfortunately this app needs root permissions. You can get these permissions by using motochopper for your TF700T with Android 4.0-4.2.

With booting TWRP one should make a backup of currently installed ROM and data, wipe caches and install cyanogenmod 10.1.

dropbox client for Synology NAS

Dropbox is a cloud storage provider. Synology builds modern home NAS. Synology’s NAS features can be extended by using plugins. Until now I missed a plugin for connecting Dropbox.

There are 2 developers. Jonathan Poland has created Synology-plugin Synobox, which is available in version 0.4.6 as spk-package for download.

This early version doesn’t support Unicode (non English characters) and is only a one way synchronzation from dropbox to Synology at the moment. I asked the developer about these features but he said that time is limited because of his job.

Christian Bourgeois created a branch recently. He’s working on the missing features and it’s still work in progress. Advanced user with knowledge of version control systems und Python might want tocreate a package by themselves.

Here are some notes for people who want to try out the early version…

First of all you’ll need a Dropbox-account. After that you have to become an app developer by clicking “create an app”. Choose an unique app namelike “synobox_user0815″ select “app folder” for access level. Press “create”. You may customize the “name of app folder”. Please note the values for “App key” and “App secret and press “update”.

Login to your Synology GUI called DSM by using a browser, use URL http://192.168.x.x:5000/webman/index.cgi (customize IP-address!). Install and start package Python which is provided by Synology.

Download, upload to DSM and install package Synobox.

Create a shared folder, e.g. “dropbox”. User “guest” has to be granted write permissions. Start ssh daemon.

Login as user “root” via ssh client (same password as DSM user admin). Change to Synobox installation folder by typing “cd /usr/syno/synoman/webman/3rdparty/SynoBox”. Change permissions for files by “chmod 666 cfg.ini” and “chmod 666 sbx.log”. Edit config file using editor vi “vi cfg.ini”. example:

PYTHON=/usr/bin/python
[UI]
UI_FOLDER=/volume1/dropbox
UI_APP_KEY=abcdefghijk
UI_APP_SECRET=abcdefghijk

Fill in correct values and save the file. After that start URL and press “authorize”: http://192.168.x.x:5000/webman/3rdparty/SynoBox/index.cgi (customize IP-address of NAS!). A subfolder will be created in folder Apps at Dropbox.

Start Synobox plugin.

XBMC 12.0 alpha5 on Android

Some weeks ago an upcoming version of XMBC on Android was anounced. Now the very first alpha version is available for installation.

XBMC is a free mediacenter software. It provides functions to organize media (audio, video, photo) and play these files (mediaplayer). XBMC is also able to run as media server. Media access can be achieved via several sources, like local filesystems as well as network SMB/CIFS (Windows shares), NFS (UNIX/Linux shares) and UPNP/DLNA (mediaserver).

Android is a well known operating system for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. The upcoming console Ouya (gaming console and mediaplayer) also uses Android.

As preparation for installing XBMC on Android you have to change settings. Alternate install sources have to be enabled.

After that you can download XBMC 12.0 alpha for ARMv7 from xda-developers forum. There are two different packages:

  • for NEON devices (optimized for NVidia Tegra 3 based devices)
  • for non-NEON devices (optimized for NVidia Tegra 2 based devices)

If you own an Android device without NVidia-chip choose “non-NEON” for installation. Another version for devices with other chips will be available later.

If XBMC has to be used as UPNP Renderer (player) or server you have to configure that in XBMC system settings.

XBMC is able to play audio, video and photo from local and network sources. But playing videos isn’t the only topic covered by XBMC. It is also very good in displaying internal and external subtitles (by using cifs or nfs on network sources). Also selecting an audio stream in a different language is no problem.

There are serveral plugins for XBMC, e.g. Mediathek plugin for watching German tv stations.

I have tested this early version of XBMC for Android on my Asus Infinity TF700T tablet. It’s running pretty stable for an alpha version. There’s stuttering on some codecs because hardware acceleration is still work in progress. There’s also no high priority in improving enegy management.

P.S.

I think XBMC will be one of the top apps for Android in near future!

PS3 Media Server access with XBMC

XBMC Media Center is a software for playback of media files. Playback is available for local drives, file shares or UPNP. XBMC is available for several platforms.

XBMC can be used to access PS3 Media Server.

First of all start PS3 Media Server, then XBMC.

Let’s access music on the PS3 Media Server. Switch to music in XBMC and press return.

Before playing music one has to add a music source manually. PS3 Media Server is accessible via UPNP.

After selecting a configured source one is able to browse the media content. As you can see on the screenshot PMS has recognized XBMC as a media renderer with valid profile.

You can also access photos and videos on PMS. First you have to configure the source, then browse and play.

PS3 Media Server 1.60 – startup and basic settings

The last blog article was about installing PS3 Media Server on Windows 7.

So let’s start PS3 Media Server by double clicking the desktop icon.

The Windows desktop firewall is enabled by default. You have to give permission for communication between “javaw.exe” and your home network.

PS3 Media Server tries to detect so called media renderers (DLNA/UPNP playback devices) like Playstation 3. PMS supports a range of devices. It is possible that your playback device/software is not detected correctly. Then an “unknown renderer” will be detected.

It is strongly recommended that you limit access to files and folders. In “navigation / share settings” press the green plus button in “shared folders” section. Add all folders with media content to be shared with your home network.

After adding the folders press the save button on top.

Switch to “common transcode settings”.

You may have a look at “general settings”. Check if the number of cpu cores were detected correctly and change it if necessary.

Have a look at section “audio settings”. If your playbackback device is capable of playing surround sound select “6 channels (5.1)”, otherwise choose “2 channels (stereo)”. Select “keep AC3″ if your playbackback device is capable of playing Dolby Digital surround sound (AC3). Select “keep DTS” if your playbackback device is capable of playing Sony Digital surround sound (DTS). Some playback devices like Playstation 3 may not support streaming DTS/AC3. For these devices additionally select “use LPCM”.

In section “video quality settings” you only have to change settings if you have poor network bandwith. This setting is only valid for usage of transcoding engine “mencoder”.

Don’t forget saving your settings!

Switch to “MEncoder”.

“use multiple CPU cores” should be enabled for performance reasons.

“remux videos with tsmuxer” should be enabled. If you want to play a video file that contains an audio codec which is not comaptible with your playback device PMS will convert the audio stream to a compatible format on the fly. This feature is also used when the video container format is not supported (like mkv on Playstation 3). If you encounter problems with this so called transcoding engine “tsmuxer” you can enforce the usage of transcoding engine “mencoder” by using virtual folder #transcoded#. PMS will then convert the video-stream to MPG2. This is not recommended because it costs much CPU ressources and network bandwith. Please note that playback of subtitles automatically enforces usage of mencoder engine!

A video file may contain several audio and subtitle languages. You can change behaviour of automatically choosing languages.

Don’t forget saving your settings!

Fine. All basic settings are done. Quit PS3 Media Server by clicking the “Quit” button.

Blog relaunch

You may have recognized that there weren’t many blog updates recently. But today there’s a relaunch of Otmanix’ blog. What’s the reason?

First of all I wanted a technical solution creating a multilanguage blog. It was pretty annoying maintaining two blogs only because of writing in English and German. I implemented the free wordpress plugin qtranslate.

Another reason for doing a fresh start was that I didn’t have a current main topic writing for. OpenSolaris and PS3 MediaServer don’t play a role for me anymore. Because of that I will start a new blog called backupinferno. You will find articles about backup and storage there.

This blog will remain for various topics.

My dear followers, greetings to everyone!

Hello world! reloaded...
