You can download PMS 1.20beta here:
- Java PS3 Mediaserver 1.20 beta (revision 335 / 17.05.09) for Windows
- Java PS3 Mediaserver 1.20 beta (revision 335 / 17.05.09) for Linux
Latest builds for Linux and Windows are also available at a thread in PMS forum since march.
MacOs betas are also available since April.
PMS latest official release can be found at code.google.com project page.
Java / JRE
Java programming language is a requirement for PMS. Therefore you need to install Java second edition runtime environment, at least version 6. You can get latest JRE here.
Installation and start of PMS on Windows XP
After installing Java Runtime you can install Java PS3 media server. Double click the setup file “pms-setup-windows-1.20.exe” and follow the instructions.
Installation and start of PMS on Linux
You also need JRE installed on Linux. You should set environment variable JAVA_HOME to JRE installation path. After that you have to decompress the setup archive for Linux with tar xzf pms-linux-1.11.tgz. You have to install mplayer, mencoder, ffmpeg and tsmuxer. If you like to stream web content also install VLC. Make sure that all binaries of these tools can be found via PATH variable. Start a shell, cd to your installation directory and start PMS with ./PMS.sh. Check permissions and set them if necessary with chmod 770 PMS.sh .
You can either use packages from your Linux distrubution or compile the tools by yourself. Sometimes distributors don’t set important compiler options, e.g. scaling support for ffmpeg. So I recommend you to compile it from source…
PMS first start
Please start up and login to your PS3 first. After that start PMS. Perhaps PMS doesn’t detect your PS3:
In that case change to general configuration tab:
In the majority of cases there are 2 problem causes:
- Port 5001 is already in use by another software like Azureus Vuze
- PMS uses the wrong network card as default
You can solve the problem by choosing the correct network card and type in an unused port, e.g. 6001. After that save and quit, start PMS once again.
You should now see this message:
PMS has detected your PS3. PMS should appear in XMB on your PS3:
You are now able to browse the filesystem of your PC or Mac and play media files.
attention!
You can only view that type of media files which is corresponding to your XMB entry point. That means you have to chose photo in XMB to see photos via PMS, … You can see all folders but only the type of media files which match your entry point.

Great turtorial!! Very helpfull.
I Still have an question, do I’ve to open the poort (5001) in my router? Because its the local network!
Thanks,
Ivo
If you’re running a personal firewall on your PC/Mac you have to open the port for PMS (standard is 5001) and/or allow cerain programs to communicate in LAn with with your PS3. Here’s a howto for Windows: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&sid=2081e31693cc2a5824b991e0ee50d278&start=30#p18802
In most cases a router doesn’t block communication between connected devices in LAN. So you don’t have to change anything on your router.
It still can’t detect my PS3, and I also tried those two solutions. I also enabled the UPnP.
Btw, Tversity works for me and Im just trying this now but it doesn’t seem to work.
Probably this is a firewall problem, read comment above…
Please read howto and faq here: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&sid=ce2e15d423d832545793479061908d46
If you can’t solve your problem write a message here: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=6&start=0
My work around for PS3 NOT DETECT is reboot computer and start PMS as soon as possible ….otherwise it will never start for me once the Pc is fully rebooted
@hogger: This is definitly not normal… Perhaps it’s your personal firewall which isn’t running at early boot time or other software which otherwise blocks the tcp/ip port used by PMS.
Need help plz!!
I’ve tried what you said in this tutorial, I have tried first on auto mode where i just started the program, and it didnt conected, then I went to the general configuration and changed the network, saved and restarted the program, and still no conection. Then I tried changing the port with the same network card (which I already double checked to see if it was the correct one), saved and restarted, still no conection to PS3, I tried the ports 6001 and then 4001.
Im not a tech savy person, and it’s my first time trying to set up a media server for the ps3, could really use some help, I dont know what the problem is. The error I get is: PS3 has not been found. Is it on?
Hi Kuroi, you did the basic stuff which works in 90% of PMS installations. Now you have to do a deep dive in analyzing your environment: wrong router and/or firewall settings are probably the root cause of your connection problems. Have a look at the PMS faq in PMS forum for configuring Windows firewall correctly. Also check your router manual for configuring upnp and firewall.
Thanks for responding so fast.
I’m still trying to make the connection work, I read the fact, I manually added the wrapper.exe (which i had to download, I put the file in the java folder), and the javaw was already in the exception list for the firewall. Still having problems with the connection, I repeated changing the port in the general configuration tab and nothing worked.
I then tried to set the firewall manually as a window service, but I didn’t understand what to do, couldn’t figure out what to do with the codes, I went into cmd but again, im not that tech savvy.
I then disconnected both firewalls (windows and ESET), tried again and nothing worked.
I check my PS3 and noticed that the IP is 1 number different compared to what I see the PSM is trying to log in is different, the ip in my router is xxx.xxx.1.5 and my ps3 is xxx.xxx.1.2, so I forced the IP address, and I got an error.
So I’m back to being really confused again. I downloaded the beta version 1.11.369
Hi Kuroi, as I wrote before it won’t be easy. There is no reason to run PMS as a service – it only gets more complicated. Sorry, there is no way to explain what to do in few sentences for someone lacking minimum skills about advanced Windows and network topics. I am not able to help you because I don’t want to spend hours for support in my spare time. If my hints are too complicated please use PMS support forum.
I completely understand, thanks for answering. As far as I understand I am doing the stuff correctly??
I will state my problem in the support forums.
Thanks for everything
Same here. Just cannot seem to get it to see my ps3 and ps3 detects no media servers. Both PC and PS3 connected to router via wi-fi. Windows firewall turned off, router firewall turned off, no security, no antivirus, nothing. Tried changing the ports, tried forcing the IP, tried restarting over and over, tried reinstalling the program, tried picking it up from ps3. Fresh installation of Windows XP…Pretty basic setup I would have thought :/ just keep getting the PS3 has not been found error
Maybe it doesn’t like DHCP or something?…but I’m not prepared to change that and inconvenience the family all using the home network particularly as the router config pages suck like a 2 year old designed it and I don’t want to fiddle. Also both PC and PS3 uses pppoe to connect to Internet…perhaps this interferes? Wish I knew what the problem was.
@Jonny Two Shoes:
Using PPPOE doesn’t make sense at all when having a router with internal/external modem, e.g. your router firewall won’t be used at all.
Please don’t wonder about not working connection in PMS when having a scary network configuration.
Update:
Just as I thought…network settings. Basically I had pppoe set on the ps3 with username and password to dial into Internet as I use multiple accounts. When I changed the Internet Settings on the PS3 to manual and did the IP Address manually suddenly the ps3 media server works on both sides
unfortunately the ps3 is disconnected from the Internet now but at least I know how to get it back and forth or maybe there are better settings to change to so will fiddle more.
Yeah unfortunately when you live in South Africa where you have to pay per gig of data you get a bit stingy with who of your family uses what account so each to their own. It’s a very common setup here.
Oh, I see. Best solution for you would be to setup IP addresses manually, e.g. 192.168.178.1 for router, 192.168.178.2 for PC, 192.168.178.3 for PS3 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 for all devices. If you can’t setup the IP address / subnet mask of your router manually both your PC and PS3 have to use IP addresses in same subnet as the router (which means using the same subnet mask of course). Otherwise internet connections won’t be possible.
Sorry, handling 2 different dial in accounts isn’t easy and should be avoided if possible. In your case it’s obviously necessary, but I can’t tell you how to do in detail because this situation doesn’t exist anymore for several years here in Germany because of flatrates. It would be easy to setup when using 2 NICs – one for LAN and one for PPPOE – but that’s beyound PS3′s capabilities…
P.S.
Have a lot of fun with coming up soccer events in your country!
I am a frequent reader of your blog and just wanted to inform you that I really love your articles.
Hi guys, I’ve done what u said but it continues to appear ” Can’t find your ps3″ what should I do ? :s
There is only me writing this blog, no community or “guys”.
Please read comments above. Probably this is a network or firewall configuration issue. I wrote a faq in PMS forum which describes how to setup Windows firewall. You can also start a new thread in PMS forum to get further help.
Good luck and have a nice weekend, Otmanix
Hi
I´m using Wmware in my mac and instaled the windows ver of ps3 media server. But it doesn’t recognize my ps3.
In the general configuration tab I do not have the option that you have in your image that says “Vmware virtual ethernet adapter…”
Can you help me? Thanks in advance
@themrmath:
You won’t see an adapter “Vmware virtual ethernet adapter…” inside a VM. You see this adapter on the physical machine (I didn’t install PMS in a VM).
You have to make sure to configure a “bridged network adapter” for your VM. Do not use “host only” or “NAT” or you won’t get a connection…
PMS has to be in the same subnet as the PS3. If you choose bridged network your VM will get an IP address via DHCP from your router as well as your Pc and PS3. This setting is the only difference between a phsical machine and a VM regarding PMS.
Best regards, Otmanix
I’m having a problem with pms. i have my ps3 in a bridged connection so it can connect to the internet, so while the ps3 is on the br idged connection the pms does not recognize the adapter in which the ps3 is connected. i does work when i removed the bridge but then i cannont access the internet. is there any work around to have them both to work? thx in advance
@Genryusai: Bridged connections are no good idea. Use ICS: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4086&p=18069
Hi. I dLed your software yesterday and it worked first time with no problems. My system (briefly) is: 2-wire router/modem, cat5e to my PC and wireless to my PS3. OS is Windows XP Pro SP3. So far all is working great and the next step is to try some HD video. Many thanks for your hard work and informative forum.
@GeorgeH: HD video over integrated wireless nic of PS3 will probably stutter. You may get 720p working with a bit tuning of parameters…
I’ve run the gauntlet of installing and tweaking my settings, all to no avail: my PS3 would not see the PMS in the XBM.
I had installed the service after the 4th or 5th try at settings changes, in hopes it would finally work. Nothing would allow the PS3 to see the server, or the server to see the PS3, till now. I finally ‘allowed’ the PMS service to specifically access my Firewall via the Windows Firewall settings. Now, my PS3 sees the Server, but the Server app does not see the PS3!?
THE MOST funny part; my XBOXs both see the PMS server and will allow streaming!
My set up is
a DLink DGL-4500 Xtreme N Gaming router,
2 PS3 120gb (one’s a spc. ed. MGS4 with P1-P2-P3 ability),
VAIO laptop with Vista running.
My PS3s are wireless connected.
Also on my Network I have…. a DLink Network Storage Drive,
two Desktop PCs running XP Pro,
a Sharp Aquos TV,
two Elite XBOX 360s, one modded, both connected via ethernet cable.
I use UPnP as the media servers on my Network. All computers have Winamp Remote and Windows 11 running.
After all I’ve tried, nothing will show the PS3 as linked in the PMS app? Any ideas?
@GREiDY:
You mix up different topics and therefore you won’t find a solution. Do things step by step…
First of all do not install PMS as a service because it makes configuration more complicated. When everything is running fine you may do it as last step with some additional tasks like changing user for service, etc.. Delete your pms.conf and start with a fresh one. Do not change many settings at the same time.
Install latest version of PMS available in PMS forum. Also read the Windows firewall howto in PMS forum. Read the Sony PS3 manual available at playstation.com homepage how to correctly setup PS3 as DLNA client. If you still have problems have a look at the debug.log. Be aware of different behaviour on Windows7 and 64bit installations, e.g. different location of pms.conf.
After that you may post your problem to PMS forum.
SENSATIONAL tutorial, it was very helpful. I got it to work, PS3 Media server is awesome! Tks!!!!!!
I was having similar issues, here is how I solved it.
Unistalled and reinstalled PMS to get a clean slate
In General Config
I forced networking
Forced IP of the server (Start/Run/CMD/ipconfig) 10.0.0.3 for me
Forced the port to 5000 (I installed PMS on a old pc in another room which must of hogged the port even after I unistalled it, it worked fine on that pc just too slow, single core)
Changed the power save setting on the PS3 because after an hour my PS3 was turning off (Noob)
I also turned off the firewall on Netlimiter2
Awesome tutorial, wish I had found it before.
Still not able to see movies.
I have installed and configured the network contoller, The playstation show up and i can see the PS3 media centre from other computers, but no movies show up? I have set my media directory under shared foldershit the spy glass, but i still do not see anything. I have a AVI, MKV and MOV files in this directory. Any Suggestions.
Thanks
Did you save your settings? Did you enter the video section in XMB on your PS3? You won’t see videos in photo or audio section in XMB.
Please stop PMS, stop all Java processes and start PMS once again. Do you see the selected folder und shared folders? If no your settings haven’t been saved correctly. Select folder once again, save and restart…
was able to get going after reinstall. by far the best media server. Thansk for your hard work.
I got it to connect by putting “MS TCP Loopback interface” for force networking on interface. The Playstation does not show up on the status bar but Windows shows it as a new discovered UPnP device. I really don’t know what else to do.
please read this howto: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&sid=9ffa711d35f8cc12659494a0819e7a73&start=80#p34933
