Java PS3 Media Server for dummies – chapter 3 installation and basic configuration

Download

You can download PMS 1.20beta here:

Latest builds for Linux and Windows are also available at a thread in PMS forum since march.

MacOs betas are also available since April.

PMS latest official release can be found at code.google.com project page.

Java / JRE

Java programming language is a requirement for PMS. Therefore you need to install Java second edition runtime environment, at least version 6. You can get latest JRE here.

Installation and start of PMS on Windows XP

After installing Java Runtime you can install Java PS3 media server. Double click the setup file “pms-setup-windows-1.20.exe” and follow the instructions.

Installation PMS - Schritt 1 Installation PMS - Schritt 2 Installation PMS - Schritt 3 Installation PMS - Schritt 4

Installation and start of PMS on Linux

You also need JRE installed on Linux. You should set environment variable JAVA_HOME to JRE installation path. After that you have to decompress the setup archive for Linux with  tar xzf pms-linux-1.11.tgz. You have to install mplayer, mencoder, ffmpeg and tsmuxer. If you like to stream web content also install VLC. Make sure that all binaries of these tools can be found via PATH variable. Start a shell, cd to your installation directory and start PMS with ./PMS.sh. Check permissions and set them if necessary with chmod 770 PMS.sh .

You can either use packages from your Linux distrubution or compile the tools by yourself. Sometimes distributors don’t set important compiler options, e.g. scaling support for ffmpeg. So I recommend you to compile it from source…

PMS first start

Please start up and login to your PS3 first. After that start PMS. Perhaps PMS doesn’t detect your PS3:

status not found

In that case change to general configuration tab:

general configuration

general configuration - NIC

In the majority of cases there are 2 problem causes:

  • Port 5001 is already in use by another software like Azureus Vuze
  • PMS uses the wrong network card as default

You can solve the problem by choosing the correct network card and type in an unused port, e.g. 6001. After that save and quit, start PMS once again.

You should now see this message:

status PS3 detected

PMS has detected your PS3. PMS should appear in XMB on your PS3:

PS3 Mediaserver im Video-Menü auf der PS3

You are now able to browse the filesystem of your PC or Mac and play media files.

Ordnerstruktur auf der PS3

attention!

You can only view that type of media files which is corresponding to your XMB entry point. That means you have to chose photo in XMB to see photos via PMS, … You can see all folders but only the type of media files which match your entry point.

    Hello.
    I m struggling to detect my ps3 on the ps3 media server. At first when I started pms the ‘red X circle’ was displayed. Iv followed the steps you v provided-I went into general config and changed the ‘force networking on interface’, saved, quit, then restarted again. Now the status says that, “a media renderer other than a ps3 has been detected.” The ‘red X circle’ has now changed to an ‘orange yield !’ sign. At the bottom it shows that it has detected WMP[127.0.0.1] and WMP[10.0.0.3]
    Iv also tried changing the ‘force port of the server’ from 5001 to 6001.
    Please help.

    Sorry,
    nice program but doesn’t work. It stops when I open it. In 5 minutes happens nothing????????? It doesn’t find PS and doesn’t give any answer.

    When do you people learn how to make programs???????

  6. otmanix says:

    @Jean-Didier
    You don’t need to set an URL. If your Sony TV is DLNA capable it should detect PMS automatically and present folders for audio/video. Read your manual how to use DLNA on your TV.

  7. otmanix says:

    @Nicholas
    WMP is Windows Media player and has been detected by PMS. But I assume you don’t want to stream to WMP.
    If PMS doesn’t recognize your PS3 or DLNA device read this faq article:

    Local GUI required ?

    I would like to run PS3 Media Server on a NAS without much transcoding.
    Is X11 required or is there an alternative administrative Interface (textbased or http)?

    Is it possible to be run as linux-service once configuration is set ?
    Were is this configuration located ? ( ~/.config/PMS/PMS.conf only contains Music-Folders)

  9. otmanix says:

    @RRG
    Have a look at Support forum / Linux: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=3
    I wouldn’t use PMS on a NAS. I think mediatomb is better for doing that (but lacks good implementation of transcoding) and is controlled via Browser.

  10. Peter says:

    Ok so previously i have had PS# media server running perfectly. However now every time i run it it gives me an error that java runtime environment is needed. I click ok install it but i get the same error.

  11. otmanix says:

    @Peter
    So the question is: Is Java Runtime installed on your computer? You can get it at http://www.java.com if it is not installed.

  14. Rutger says:

    Thanks for the explanations!
    I have a question about refreshing the designated folder(s) automatically? How can I do this?
    What happens now is, that for every new file I add, I have to restart the PMS to have it detect that file. That’s not right, is it?

    (I have PMS installed on a W7 64bit) Hope you can help me out?! :-)

  15. otmanix says:

    @Rutger
    New files aren’t detected automatically. A scan for new files has to be executed which is done at startup of PMS.
    You can also start it manually during running PMS when using a certain URL which is mentioned in debug.log:

    A tiny cache admin interface is available at: http://x.x.x.x:5001/console/home

    x.x.x.x is IP address of your PC.

  16. otmanix says:

    @Jesper
    enable “mplayer web” and “mencoder web” transcoding engine in transcoding settings

  17. Sesh says:

    Hi. Thank you for taking the time to write this guide. Was wondering if you could help. I have managed to get the ps3 media server up on the XMB screen for photos, music, videos etc. However when I try to open it on the playstation, it comes up with a DLNA protocol error (7531) has occurred and that there are no titles. Any idea what to do about this. The folders aren’t empty and I am using a Mac with OSX.
    Thank you

  18. lashanda says:

    i did everything you said do still got big red x what am i doin wrong?

  19. David says:

    How do I go about installing mplayer, mencoder, ffmpeg and tsmuxer?

  20. otmanix says:

    @David
    These tools are already included in the Windows installation bundle. If you’re using Linux you have to install them by yourself or use the versions available in your distros repository.

  21. msyhlez says:

    Well I’ve set it up on Windows XP and it works fine great tool.
    The only problem I had at first was that it picked up a wrong IP address, so
    I disabled it and restarted the server and then it picked up the PS.

    I can view all my files on my ps3 but I can’t play any of them. When I try to play a movie the screen just goes black with the loading icon in the corner. When I try to play music the xmd background will remain but no music will play. What am I doing wrong?

  24. CTA says:

    Is there a conflict in the system if our PCs are on a router (wired), but the PS3 is directly connected to the modem via a switch with a static IP? When I start up the program it sits with the red X telling me it can’t find renderers for about 5-10 minutes, but then it finds a WMP renderer. It never seems to be able to locate the PS3, but I can’t find anything in the FAQ that answers this particular question. This doesn’t seem to want to work, no matter what settings I tweak.
