Thank you so much. And what an incident. I got my 52Z4500 TV today, but none of the other media servers (mediatomb, ushare, and older ps3ms versions) did work, and you released that working version 2 days ago :) Great and thanks!

Hi, this is “bleeding edge” technology – don’t expect it to be perfect yet. Further infos and updates you will find here in this thread in PMS forum: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2099&start=90
Have a lot of fun with your Bravia!

    P.S.
New Bravia z5500-series will be out next month with new bravia3 engine and better streaming client which also supports video playback…

  3. maxauthority says:

Hi, I thought about waiting for the Z5500 series, but decided against it for the following reasons:
1.) It’ll be more expensive, at least for the first few months, and i really don’t want to wait more months to replace my old 15″ (!) inch tv :)
2.) It is suspected that the bravia engine 3 of the W5500 is the cause of a much higher input lag, which seriously affects fast PS3 games like racing simulations/shooters.
3.) I am getting a PS3 anyway, so the (poor) video support of the z5500 dlna client was not really important.

And yes, i really do have fun with my bravia, finally an LCD tv which i really thing has a nice picture :)

    regards, and thanks,

    Martin

PS: I still don’t know if i like the directory-only approach of PMS, as i have to browse many more subdirs just to get to my music. Probably i could add /home/maxauthority/music as a top-level item, will have to look further into configuring PMS.

what does it support for sony LCD with DLNA?

as i understand, DLNA supports streaming from another DLNA compatible product, so its like the stock PS3 streaming from PC ( which doesn’t support most video formats, hence the need for PMS)

so what is so different about DLNA if its not like the PS3?

  5. otmanix says:

New Tvs often have an integrated DLNA client, that means these devices are able to contact an DLNA compatible media server like PMS or Nero Media home and retrieve media files/streams. The amount of supported codecs depend on the DLNA client (tv model). New Sony Bravia W5xxx- or Z5xxx-series for example support MP3, WAV, JPG and MPG2. So you are able to watch movies, music and photos from your media server if the format is supported.
So why choose PMS as media server? PMS has a feature called transcoding. If you have a media file which isn’t supported by your DLNA client PMS is able to convert it on the fly (e.g mkv-file with h.264-codec will be converted to MPG2 for Sony Bravia). In that cause you need enough CPU power on your PC for transcoding (> 2,6GHz dual core cpu).
You don’t need a PS3, Popcorn hour or similar streaming clients anymore because the tv has this feature already included.

In reality this technology is brand new. It is early beta in PS3 Media Server. Also supported formats in tvs will improve… new Samsung tvs already support h.264 video codec. I think in 2 years this techology will be standard feature in all new tvs. At the moment it is experimental…

  6. BraveHeart says:

ya i understand that, my question is,

a DLNA enabled HDTV serves the exact same kind of purpose as a PS3 right? which is to access PM3 and receive the transcoding data to the TV itself.

  7. otmanix says:

    Yes…
You can’t play console games with a DLNA enabled TV and other nice features. But the streaming feature is already included and therefore you don’t need an additional streaming client like PS3. At the moment support for PS3 and other streaming clients like Popcorn hour is very good, DLNA enabled tvs are in still in developement / early beta stage.

    Hi,

Would it be possible for you to point me to the link, or explain if it is possible to view youtube using sony bravia 5500 series with PS3 media server. I have installed the latest beta version and I am able to view all the video, audio etc… but I am not sure how to view online streaming.

    Thanks

    Hi,

sorry, my post contains incorrect email address. Would it be possible for you to point me to the link, or explain if it is possible to view youtube using sony bravia 5500 series with PS3 media server. I have installed the latest beta version and I am able to view all the video, audio etc… but I am not sure how to view online streaming.

    Thanks

  11. otmanix says:

Hi JIGNESH, enter video menu, then virtual folder #- web -# – you will see several folders with web content in it like youtube. I don’t know if this is working on Bravia because I don’t have such a tv. Better ask in pms forum. There are others with bravia…

  12. Jignesh says:

    Thanks Otmanix,

I’ve got VLC media player installed on my pc. I followed your steps and clicked on the one of the link of youtube from #- web -# folder. To my surprise, instead of playing file on BRAVIA, it started on my laptop using VLC player. I then removed the VLC player and tried it again, but without any success.

  13. otmanix says:

Hi Jignesh, please start a new thread in PMS forum. Write about your problem and attach debug.log located in your PMS installation directory.

Hello, I am trying to locate Java PS3 Mediaserver 1.20 beta (revision 343 / 13.06.09) for Windows and cannot find the downlaod. can you direct me to it, please?
    Thanks…Peter

  15. otmanix says:

    Hi Peter,
I offer free download service for certain PMS betas for a certain time and redirect to PMS latest build thread later. I do it because sometimes latest build isn’t available in PMS forum.
There is no website for download of historical PMS betas, only for official builds. If you want a specific beta build read the compiling howto and create this build for your own pleasure. There is no reason for me to provide a beta which is 6 months old. I have to watch at my website traffic and don’t want to spread old stuff.
    Best regards, Otmanix

  16. Peter says:

    Hello Otmanix,

Thanks a lot. I did find a compiled version beta 1.20 version 343 and installed it. (Compiling is beyond my skill level.) Java PS3 Media Server is amazing!!!

I can stream AVI and MP3 files to my Bravia W5500 through a 10/100 network using the keyint=3 setting and forcing the transcoding of avi, flv and xvid. I’ve also forced the IP of the server.

My copy of VLC (0.98) has access to a French TV station and that works too.

I am having trouble streaming other web based services eg Youtube, podcasts etc. They appear to be loading but then stop. I suspect that this is a VLC configuration issue. Can you point me to directions for configuring VLC 0.98 so that I can get it right? (The online documentation for VLC refers to the latest versions of VLC.) I am not sure where the problem might lie.

This whole process reminds me of my first computer which ran on CPM which is what could be described as a standard operating system without a standard.

    Thanks for your program!!

    Peter

  17. otmanix says:

    Hi Peter,
first of all I have to clarify that it’s not “my program”. I’m only user, Shagrath is the main developer – it’s his program…
I still don’t understand why you insist in using this quite old version of PMS beta. There has been a lot of new code to improve streaming with other media renderers like Sony Bravia since revision 343. At the moment it’s revision 369! Here you can see a list of what has changed: http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/source/list
You can download latest revision 369 here: http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3217
Web streaming / VLC and PMS is a topic which I would call untimely death. Simply forget it… There are 3 problems which can’t be fixed in short time. VLC has some code changes since version 0.9.8 which caused later version to stop working with PMS. Shagrath has opened a case in VLC forum regarding that – there is still no answer. Also PMS seems to have some code changes which prevent later versions of PMS to work properly with VLC 0.9.8. I’m sorry but I don’t know the revision when these changes occured because I rarely used Webstreaming feature. The most important reason why this will never work in future is copy protection. Most sites with video and audio content protect their media from being downloaded with VLC. There is no other legal way but using different technology. This would be opening a browser in background and doing screen capture frame by frame as well as capturing audio at the sound card. Afaik that’s the way tversity handles this problem. But there’s no skilled programmer in PMS team creating code for this topic. So don’t expect too much when using web streaming in PMS.
    Best regards, Otmanix
