You can see that there are 2 cleaning tapes and 18 unlabeled tapes. Lets label some tapes…

Backup to Disk

Networker uses Advanced Filetype devices (AFTD) for disk backup. Let’s create a AFTD on mountpoint /aftd.

O.k. Now you have an up and running Networker server with a VTL and AFTD. You can use shell or NMC to administrate Networker.

conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this step by step howto. Some feedback would be nice

Kind regards, Otmanix

You can see that there are 2 Spectra Python tape libraries, each containing 4 IBM LTO4 tape drives.

Note

EMC Networker will not recognize the second tape library. There seems to be a problem that the second tape library has the same SCSI controller number as the first one.

configuration

The MHVTL configuration files are located in /etc/mhvtl. You may stop MHVTL with /etc/init.d/mhvtl stop, change the files as desired and start MHVTL with /etc/init.d/mhvtl start once again.

nwsrv:/etc/mhvtl # ls

Virtualbox snapshots

Before doing critical stuff in your virtual machine take a snapshot. If sth awfully goes wrong you are able to return to your snapshot. With Virtualbox you are able to create lots of snapshots and delete them later to save diskspace.

OpenSUSE 11.2 x86

infos about VM

Image contains OpenSUSE 11.2 x86 standard installation inc. network support and VirtualBox guest additions

default user/password: opensuse/reverse

admin user/password: root/reverse

first start

Now startup your VM by clicking the green button in VirtualBox.

Change your keyboard layout if you don’t use a US-keyboard.

Press SUSE button > configure desktop > regional & language > keyboard layout > enable keyboard layouts > add language and move it to top postion > apply

network settings

start yast2 (OpenSUSE setup tool)

enter password reverse

EMC Networker server requires a non changing IP address and a reliable name resolution service. You have several options:

non changing IP address:

static IP address setup (manual setup of valid network settings, be careful – avoid duplicate IP addresses in your network!!!)

DHCP with address reservation (reserve an IP address for your VMs NIC / MAC address on your DHCP server)

reliable name resolution:

/etc/hosts (manual setup of hostname and corresponding IP address in text file)

DNS (manual setup of hostname and corresponding IP address in your DNS server)

In this example I choose static IP address and /etc/hosts.

switch to network devices > network settings > select NIC > edit

add hostname to /etc/hosts

switch to network devices > network settings > hostnames

partitioning, formating and mounting

format and mount your second virtual disk to /opt and /aftd – you will need it later for installation of MHVTL / as storage for your virtual tape library (20GB) and Networker advanced filetype devices / disk storage (10GB) …

switch to system > partitioner > select disk sdb > add…

install Virtualbox

Virtualbox is available for serveral platforms. There is a manual for installing VBox.

Here is an example installation of VirtualBox 3.2.8 on Windows:

implement OpenSUSE virtual machine

Download OpenSUSE 11.2 x86 virtual box preconfigured image folder

username/password for VM: opensuse/reverse

image contains network installation, guest additions installed

decompress image-download opensuse-11.2-x86.7z with 7zip/p7zip

create the following folder structure in your personal folder and put the files contained in image to the correct locations:

C:\Users\otmanix\.VirtualBox
                 ├───HardDisks
                     └───opensuse-11.2-x86.vdi
                 └───Machines
                     └───opensuse-11.2-x86
                         └───opensuse-11.2-x86.xml

After that register virtual machine and virtual disk to VirtualBox. Open command prompt / shell:

There are some settings in the preconfigured VM which have to be modified:

increase RAM size (at least 800MB)

if your PC has plenty of CPU cores, increase the CPU count

add an additional disk for /opt mount point where MHVTL will be located (20GB) and for /aftd mount point which Networker diskbackup will use (10GB)

change network to bridged in order to be able to connect your test backup VM to your real network and backup a real system…

After doing the changes the settings should look like this:

Introduction

backup

Every company runs a backup environment … or at least they should do that

A typical backup environment consists of a backup server, backup devices and media, backup clients and at least one network to connect the components. One collects backup data with the backup client on the system which should be protected. These data are sent to the backup server which stores them on backup media on a backup device. This may be a disk, tape or virtual tape. The backup server also manages a database were meta information about the backups are stored.

restore

Is there a reason for doing backups? Hell, yes!!! There is a main reason: You probably want to be able to restore your important data in case of a failure. Of course you also want to keep IT staff in business

O.k., at least there’s one guy who is not doing backup but doesn’t have to be afraid of loss of data… Linus Torvalds

test environment

Lots of firms don’t have a test environment for backup/restore. With this article I will show you how to install and configure a small test backup environment for free.

O.k., you will need a PC with some GB free disk space, but that’s all.

Networker

EMC Networker, formerly known as Legato Networker, is one of the leading backup products. There are serveral advanced options like doing online backups for databases.

You can download latest Networker releases here on this FTP server. Networker will run 30 days without limits after installation.

You will get more infos about Networker in EMC Networker Online community. There is also a great blog by Preston who also wrote a very good book about backup/restore:
Enterprise Systems Backup and Recovery: A Corporate Insurance Policy

MHVTL

MHVTL is an open source virtual tape library (VTL) for Linux. Yes, it’s free! You can simulate a real tape library. You will love it There’s also a forum.

VirtualBox

Oracle VirtualBox is a software which is able to simulate another operating system within your running OS. VBox is freely available for Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac Os X.

You can get ready to use os-images for VBox. The images are compressed. Use 7zip or p7zip to uncompress.

NW116691: Savegrp did not end despite inactivity timeout reached

If a networker client is rebooted during backup the job daemon didn’t recognize the situation. One had to restart networker on backup server and delete /nsr/res/jobsdb/* in order to fix the situation.

PS3 Media Server and PS3

My blog readers already know that I’m a user of PS3 Media Server. I use PMS in order to stream media files to my PS3.

But there are some disadvantages in this solution when watching HD-videos. Either I have bad wifi-performance (54Mb/s) with my PS3 or I have to unplug my dreambox in order to use 100Mb/s LAN. Also my pc hardware isn’t up to date (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e / 2,6GHz). Reducing CPU load by using CoreAVC with CUDA for decoding doesn’t help in any case. I also dislike having my pc running all the time.

There are lots of HD media players available, most of them use chips from Realtek or sigma Designs. Support of formats and codecs is really good in current devices.

Syabas Popcorn Hour NMT A-200

So I bought such a media player some weeks ago. I chose Syabas Popcorn Hour NMT A-200 because one can run both 2,5” and 3,5” hard disk drives. Also Syabas offers a certified WLAN-adapter (IEEE 802.11n). The builtin fan is really, really annoying. But the french Popcorn hour reseller offers a metal case. The A-200 is able to operate fanless after reassembling the parts in the alternate case.

original case:

reassembled fanless A-200 in Moovika metal case:

P.S.

One should have assembled at least pc cooling before reassembling the A-200

quick start guide for A-200

First of all read the installation instructions. It’s also clever to read what to do when updating Firmware of NMT A-200 fails…

startup A-200 and do configuration (at least network config)

update A-200 firmwareupdate (it’s simple via internet when using menu)

mount 2,5” or 3,5” SATA hdd

install NMT apps (it’s simple via internet when using menu)

activate FTP, NFS and SMB for file upload/download

activate UPNP in order to enable NMT A-200 as streaming server

download and install NMT Community Software Installer (CSI)

download and install Lundman Shell and PHPterminal via NMT CSI, download and unzip netcat for Windows (tools for using A-200 shell)

download and install filemanager via NMT CSI (filemanager with root access)

software for NMT C-200 should also work on A-200 (same CPU type). But libz library is missing on A-200. Copy tar-file to /share/Apps/Qt/lib and unzip it there (don’t unzip within Windows because tar-file contains symbolic links).

download and install CSI Gaya via NMT CSI (replacement for NMT CSI, use it via tv or browser)

There’s a known bug with HDMI synchronization which troubles HDMI connections with certain tv models. Workaround: change your video output settings from auto to e.g. 1080p 50Hz (choose best setting appropriate for your tv).

There’s another bug with HDMI CEC. Once you have started playback of a video on your NMT you cannot switch to another input source on your AV receiver. You have to shutdown the NMT to cleanup the situation. Workaround: turn of HDMI CEC on your AV receiver.

Lundman Shell

change to local shell (Windows command prompt)

netcat nmt 2222

sh

PHP Terminal

http://nmt:9999/phpterminal_web/

You may have to disable authentication because of a bug.

change file \\nmt\share\Apps\phpterminal\webui\index.php with text editor

function checkPassword($passwd)
{
//if(!isset($_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'])||
//    !isset($_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW']) ||
//    !isset($passwd[$_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER']]) ||
//    $passwd[$_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER']] != $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW'])
//    {
//        @session_destroy();
